宇宙のいたるところに電流が発見されたことで、天体物理学者達の気象学の語彙（用語）は時代遅れになりました。
紫外線での土星のこの偽色の画像は、土星の南極の周りのオーロラの完全な円と、その北極の周りのオーロラの一部を示しています。
プラズマ物理学者は、宇宙時代のほぼ初めから、電流が地球の赤道より上の領域から磁極の周りのオーロラ領域に流れ、これらの回路がオーロラに電力を供給することを知っていました。
おそらく、土星のオーロラは同様の回路によって照明されています。
しかし、従来の天体物理学者達は、気象学的な比喩でオーロラを説明することに固執しています：

The discovery of electric currents everywhere in space makes the meteorological vocabulary of astrophysicists obsolete.

From almost the beginning of the space age, plasma physicists have known that electric currents flow from regions high above Earth’s equator to the auroral regions around the magnetic poles and that these circuits power the auroras.
